The Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) will hold a full scale emergency simulation exercise at the George F.L. Charles Airport on Wednesday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
The aim of the simulated aircraft accident is to test and evaluate the airport’s emergency response capabilities while providing hands-on training to airport and airline staff, Victoria Hospital, the police, Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services, and other emergency personnel.
During the exercise, emergency personnel will respond as in a real emergency, including the use of ambulances, fire-fighting equipment, road closure and medical personnel, all supported by units of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force. This activity is another platform to increase the effectiveness of the national disaster response system in Saint Lucia.
Director of Airports, Lambert Remy, advocated that the exercise is in-keeping with the requirements stipulated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) which mandates that all aerodromes used by the public, conduct such exercises at least every two years.
The International Aviation Community has been informed of this exercise and although it may cause some inconvenience to the residents of Vigie we hope that they will understand that this is necessary in order to ensure that George F. L. Charles Airport remains compliant with the ICAO requirements.
