Media Release: The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Nutrition Observes Stress Awareness Month Under the Theme “Be the Change”

by Ministry of Health
Stress is a natural response to challenges and, in some cases, can motivate positive action.

April is being observed as Stress Awareness Month, with a national focus on raising awareness about the serious impact of stress on both physical and mental health. This year’s theme, “Be the Change,” encourages individuals not only to recognize stress in their lives but to take meaningful action to reduce and manage it.

Stress is a natural response to challenges and, in some cases, can motivate positive action. However, when stress becomes chronic and prolonged, it can negatively affect overall health, productivity, and quality of life. Prolonged stress may lead to burnout in the workplace, reduced efficiency, and long-term health complications.

Health officials are emphasizing that stress can affect multiple organ systems. It may contribute to elevated blood pressure and heart-related conditions, weaken the immune system making individuals more prone to infections, and significantly impact mental health and emotional well- being.

Common signs and symptoms of stress include:

  • Extreme tiredness and fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Insomnia
  • Changes in appetite (increased or decreased)
  • Irritability, anger, or feelings of hopelessness
  • Physical symptoms such as cold or sweaty hands during acute stress

As part of Stress Awareness Month activities, community mental health workers and health educators from the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Nutrition will be visiting workplaces and schools across the island to conduct educational sessions. These engagements will target employees, students, and importantly, managers highlighting the shared responsibility of recognizing stress and fostering supportive environments.

The campaign promotes practical stress management strategies, including:

  • Identifying personal stressors and taking proactive steps to manage them
  • Practicing positive thinking and reframing negative thoughts
  • Engaging in regular exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle
  • Using relaxation techniques
  • Managing time and finances responsibly
  • Knowing when to pause and seek support

Employers are encouraged to be attentive to signs of burnout among staff and to create supportive work environments that prioritize well-being. Colleagues are also reminded to look out for one another, as some individuals may not recognize when they are experiencing stress.

Additionally, April is observed as Autism Awareness Month, and the public is reminded that individuals with autism, as well as their families and caregivers, may experience unique stressors. The month also highlights the importance of acceptance, inclusion, and recognition of the valuable contributions of persons with autism within society.

The public is encouraged to “Be the Change” by taking active steps to manage stress and support others in doing the same. By addressing stress early and intentionally, individuals can protect their health, strengthen relationships, and enhance productivity at home, school, and in the workplace.
