Media Release: NAP spans multiple sectors

THE DEPUTY CHIEF ENVIROMENT OFFICER SAID ALL SECTORS HAVE TO BE A PART OF THE OVERARCHING INITIATIVE.

With the launch of Saint Lucia’s National Adaptation Plan, the Department of Sustainable Development has underlined the efforts made by the various government sectors in ensuring that all bases are covered.

The National Adaptation Plan (NAP) document aims to identify medium and long term climate change adaptation needs, as well as strategies and programs to address those needs.

With the plan needing to meet such a vast requirement, the Deputy Chief Enviroment Officer, Dawn Pierre Nathoniel, has stated that all sectors have to be a part of the overarching initiative.

“The NAP covers tourism, water, agriculture, fisheries, and natural resource management which is inclusive of coastal, marine and biodiversity, as well as education and health. So the idea is an overarching development plan.”

The Deputy Chief Environment officer went on to add that while some sectors had already been researched and anatomized completely, there were still those that called for continued analysis.

“Under the guidance of various ministries and departments, we were able to delve a little deeper and go into the advancement of Sectorial Adaptation Strategies and Action Plans, we call them SASAPs. Specifically in delving deeper we were able to cover in depth, tourism, water, agriculture and fisheries in the first instance. We want to undertake the same depth of analysis and the same identification of measures and projects and programmes in the other sectors as soon as funding becomes available.”

The official NAP document was launched on April 17.
