As part of activities for Arts and Heritage month, the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) held the National Woulèlaba Competition at the Marchand Grounds.

The Minister for Local Government and Culture, Sen. Hon. Fortuna Belrose, commented on the significance of the location.

“Over the last fifty years, and even beyond that, Marchand has been a very strong sporting community, and this is evidenced today by the response of the athletes who represented Marchand. The Woulèlaba was well played. This builds community spirit, the players’ confidence levels, and lets them know that they are capable of delivering, not only on the field but even in terms of the organization of the event.”

Woulèlaba is a local version of cricket that is most popular in rural communities. The Woulèlaba competition is the third event on the calendar of activities for Arts and Heritage Month.

Hilary La Force, Director of the Folk Research Centre said the one-day indigenous game differed from previous years.

“The Woulèlaba which is organized every year over a period of two to three months with different games in various communities, but this year we wanted to have one festival at the Marchand grounds, which is one of the best grounds in the country, and also have the people from Castries and the surrounding areas to come and view our indigenous game of cricket.”

The next item on the list of activities is the “La Wenn Kwéyòl” pageant. It will be held at the National Cultural Centre on Oct, 20.
