Media Release: Government to strengthen cancer prevention strategies

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH TO INTRODUCE THE HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS (HPV) VACCINE.

by Ministry of Health and Wellness

The Department of Health and Wellness in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) plans to strengthen its cancer prevention strategies to reduce the burden of cancers among the population. Consequently, it will host a media consultation on Thursday, Oct. 18, to discuss with the media this important subject matter.

While cancer screening plays a vital role in early detection, preventive strategies such as vaccination have proven to substantially reduce acute and chronic infections and reduce mortality.

Through the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) the Department of Health seeks to introduce the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine to students of Grade 6, as part of the routine school immunization program; and hepatitis B vaccine to newborns. Both vaccines will become part of the National Immunization Schedule as a cancer prevention strategy in promoting and maintaining the health of children and adolescents, and reducing other related debilitating diseases in adulthood.

The media consultation will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at the Department of Health’s conference room in the Sir Stanislaus James Building, on the second floor. For queries, or to confirm attendance, contact the Immunization Manager, Julietta Frederick-Cassius, at 758.285.9278, 758.468.5382; or the Communications Officer Simon at 758.285.3788.
