Media Release: ENSURING A SAFE CARNIVAL 2025 – IMPORTANT DRONE REGULATIONS

by Ministry of External Affairs
TO HELP PREVENT AIRCRAFT INCIDENTS OR ACCIDENTS AND AVOID DISRUPTIONS TO AIRPORT OPERATIONS—PARTICULARLY AT GFLCA, WHICH LIES DIRECTLY ALONGSIDE THE JOHN COMPTON HIGHWAY

As Saint Lucia prepares to celebrate Carnival 2025, culminating in the Parade of the Bands on Monday, July 21 and Tuesday, July 22, the Ministry responsible for Civil Aviation, in collaboration with the Carnival Planning and Management Committee (CPMC), is appealing to the public to strictly observe drone safety regulations, especially near the George F. L. Charles Airport (GFLCA) in Castries.

To help prevent aircraft incidents or accidents and avoid disruptions to airport operations—particularly at GFLCA, which lies directly alongside the John Compton Highway, the route used for the Parade of the Bands—the Ministry reminds all drone users of the following:

  1. Recreational Drone Use: Recreational drone use is strictly prohibited near airports or within the designated no-drone zones surrounding Hewanorra International Airport and George F. L. Charles Airport. These zones extend 2.5 miles from each airport and must be respected at all times.
  2. Commercial Drone Activity: Applications for commercial drone operations within these restricted zones are considered on a case-by-case basis. For Carnival 2025, including the Parade of the Bands, only one drone operator endorsed by the CPMC has been authorized to capture aerial footage of the events in Castries.
  3. Event-Specific Safety: Revelers, vendors, and spectators are encouraged to enjoy the festivities responsibly. Unauthorized drone activity poses serious safety risks to flight operations and public safety, and can harm Saint Lucia’s international aviation reputation.

The Ministry emphasizes that unauthorized drone use is a serious threat to aviation safety and may result in enforcement action. Your cooperation is vital in keeping our skies safe and ensuring an enjoyable Carnival season for all.
