The milestone commemorates four decades of growth, academic achievement, and national impact.

The Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) officially launched its 40th anniversary celebrations under the theme “40 Years of Excellence: Shaping Our Futures, Honoring Legacy.” The milestone commemorates four decades of growth, academic achievement, and national impact.

SALCC traces its roots to the historic Morne site, where in 1796, formerly enslaved Africans resisted British forces in a six-month struggle for freedom. Vice Principal for Academics, Dr. Winston Phulgence, highlighted that the college represents a reclaiming of history, transforming a site of colonial monument into a center of higher learning.

Since its formal establishment in 1986 through the merger of the A-Level College, Teachers’ College, and Technical College, SALCC has expanded programs to include nursing, agriculture, and bachelor’s degrees in partnership with the University of the West Indies. Dr. Phulgence emphasized the institution’s ongoing evolution, including restructured academic programs during COVID-19, and its ambition to achieve university college status.

“As we move forward, this institution will continue to create citizens who make our ancestors proud,” Dr. Phulgence noted, stressing the symbolic importance of naming the college after Nobel Laureate Sir Arthur Lewis, whose legacy of innovation and academic excellence inspires students to pursue achievement beyond perceived limitations.

Minister in the Ministry of Education, Honourable Danny Butcher, described SALCC as “a pillar of academic excellence, social mobility, and national transformation,” highlighting its role in shaping thinkers, innovators, public servants, entrepreneurs, and cultural ambassadors who contribute to Saint Lucia and the wider world.

Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr. Cletus Springer, added that the milestone serves as both a celebration and a call to action. “Our charge is to build on this legacy, to renew our collective purpose, and to ensure the next 40 years are marked by even greater achievements and deeper impact,” he said.

The anniversary launch featured the unveiling of the college’s 40th anniversary logo, designed by Mr. Ted Sandiford. The logo symbolizes growth, resilience, and transformation over four decades, with green representing knowledge and opportunity, gold denoting excellence, and flowing ribbons reflecting unity across generations and departments. At its center is the image of Sir Arthur Lewis, anchoring the brand in a legacy of intellectual rigor and visionary leadership.

SALCC’s 40th anniversary celebrates a rich history, honors its legacy, and positions the institution for continued growth and impact in the years ahead.
