Media Release: GINet Wi-Fi Zone to be launched in Vieux Fort

THE WI-FI ZONE WILL ENCOURAGE THE PROVISION OF DIVERSE SERVICES.
by Ministry of the Public Service

The Government of Saint Lucia, in collaboration with the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), will tomorrow launch a Wi-Fi zone in Vieux Fort.

The Wi-Fi zone is part of the Government Island-wide Network (GINet) Project.

The GINet Project seeks to improve Wi-Fi connectivity, using Taiwan’s advantages in ICT, to help Saint Lucia develop WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) in public areas of cities and towns, providing residents, tourists, and businessmen with free or low-cost Internet.

In 2010, Saint Lucia’s Population and Housing Census indicated that less than half of the population, only 43 percent has access to the internet, with the highest percentage concentrated in the north of the Island namely Castries and Gros-Islet, resulting in an urban and rural digital divide. The Wi-Fi zone will increase internet use, and encourage the provision of diverse and innovative services, ability development, and the promotion of convenient educational and tourist services.

The GINet Wi-Fi Zone will be launched on Dec, 5, at the Vieux-Fort Independence Square, on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m.
