THE TWO-DAY EVENT PROVIDED INFORMATION AND AN OPPORTUNITY FOR SOME TO REGISTER THEIR OWN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY.

In observance of World Intellectual Property Day on April 26, the Registry of Companies and Intellectual Property hosted a two-day commemorative event.

“World Intellectual Property Day Open House” was held on Wednesday, April 25, followed by the “World Intellectual Property Day Help Desk” on Thursday, April 26.

Deputy Registrar Tricia Cypal stated that the two-day event not only provided a wealth of information and understanding, but also provided an opportunity for those who needed to register their own intellectual property to do so.

“It was a means of getting direct interaction with persons of interest and persons who deal with these areas of intellectual property, so we can provide the necessary information to them so they can be more informed and have the opportunity to interact face to face with the officials at the registry to get the knowledge and information that they require.”

While both events were open to the general public, Ms Cypal said the activity was mainly targeted at those who have the potential for their intellectual property to be protected, such as business and company owners, as well as inventors, designers and creators. She stressed that it is important for those who fall into the specified categories to register their intellectual property.

“Intellectual property rights are territorial rights, so you will be expected to register your intellectual property in every jurisdiction where you will seek to protect your intellectual property. Notwithstanding that you register your intellectual property in Saint Lucia, if you want to enforce those rights in another jurisdiction you will be required to register those rights,” she explained. “All applications for intellectual property should be submitted through the registry through your attorney.”

Both events took place at the Registry of Companies located on the second floor at Hewanorra House.
