Strengthening early warning systems in Saint Lucia

PARTICIPANTS LEARNED ABOUT METHODS USED TO MITIGATE AGAINST THE IMPACT OF DISASTERS.
by NEMO

Saint Lucia, through the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), received some technical assistance from the Cuban government to conduct Hazard, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment for the island.

The technical experts were on island last week imparting knowledge and skills to the various groups of the NEMO, including the District Disaster Management Committees. One of the purposes of the exercise was to have participants identify hazards (natural and man-made) that may occur within a community; and to present ways and means to prepare for and mitigate against the impact of those hazards to avoid disasters.

The organization is seeking to improve means of early warning for disasters in vulnerable communities round the island. The Dennery community was chosen as the case study for the exercise.

NEMO thanks the Cuban government and the residents of the Dennery community for their participation in the exercise.
