CANDIDATES HANDED IN THEIR NOMINATION PAPERS TODAY.
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Monday May 7, 2018 – A record 125 candidates were set to secure their place in the May 24th general election today on Nomination Day, as electoral officials said preparations for the vote were going well.
A total 125 candidates were expected to hand in their nomination papers over the course of the day. The upcoming election is expected to be a straight fight between the Barbados Labour Party and the Democratic Labour Party, both of which are expected to field a full slate of 30 candidates.
But five other parties are also in the race: the United Progressive Party, Solutions Barbados, Barbados Integrity Movement, Bajan Free Party and the People’s Democratic Congress.
There will also be several independent candidates are in the running.
The Electoral and Boundaries Commission (EBC) said the staff was working around the clock to complete necessary tasks to ensure things go smoothly on Election Day.
EBC Chairman John Haynes said the organisation had completed all of its preparatory work for the polls.
“The Electoral Department has done all that is required with regard to its mandate to have elections conducted in this country. We have already procured all of our election materials, equipment and supplies, as well as completed the training of election workers, and identified polling stations and counting centres,” heynes explained.
Haynes said when Revising/Registration Centres close today, the Electoral Department would continue to investigate the applications for registration and change of residence and the Register will continually be updated until the Register for Elections is published on May 18.
He stated that within a few days, registered electors would receive election circulars informing them of the location of their polling station.
