Caribbean: Trinidad Prison Escapees Release Video Claiming Innocence

Trinidad Prison Escapees Release Video Claiming Innocence

Michael Finley (left) and Olatunji Denbow are the last two of eight prison escapees on the run.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Monday May 20, 2019 – The two prison escapees who remain on the run have released a video claiming they were framed for double murder and pleading with the authorities to investigate their claims.

Olatunji Denbow and Michael Finley are the only two still inmates at large, following the recapture of the other six prisoners who broke out of the Golden Grove prison last Wednesday. The duo is accused of the murders of Andre La Touche and Abiola Noel who were killed at their Laventille home in February 2016.

But in a video posted on Facebook, they said they wanted their names cleared.

“Let we have we day in court, sooner than later nah, please….We not armed, we not dangerous. We do not intend to be dangerous. We don’t intend to be a danger to society, no how. We ready and willing to hand in weself. We just want fairness. As soon as allyuh ready for real justice,” Denbow said.

But Police Commissioner Gary Griffith has insisted that it is for the justice system to decide on their guilt or innocence and they will be pursued and recaptured.

“They can sing from now to high heaven, it is irrelevant to me and irrelevant to the police service. We will hunt you down and we will bring them to justice and let the court decide,” he said.

“It is right of the individuals to claim their innocence. That is going to be decided not by WhatsApp, social media or the Commissioner of Police, but by the criminal justice system and that is how it would take place.”

The top cop has also cautioned that anyone who is helping the two men while they are on the run that they are breaking the law and would be dealt with accordingly.

“What I do find very interesting is the situation whereby the individuals have some degree of support by other individuals who seem to be guiding them accordingly. And I will pursue these individuals because I see them as enemies of the State at this time,” he warned.

“They are fugitives and those individuals who are aiding and abetting these escaped fugitives they will also be hunted down because they are also committing a crime,” he said.
