As Saint Lucia observes International Day of Older Persons today, October 1, under the theme “Our Elders, Our Heritage,” Minister with responsibility for Older Persons Hon. Emma Hippolyte, is celebrating the wisdom, resilience and enduring contributions of the nation’s older citizens.
Addressing an event at Serenity Park in honour of the nation’s seniors, Minister Hippolyte described older persons as the “living archives” of Saint Lucia’s history, the storytellers of its communities and reservoirs of knowledge that continue to guide younger generations.
She acknowledged that ageing can bring challenges, including loss of loved ones, reduced mobility and health concerns, but stressed that advancing age also brings perspective, wisdom and strength of spirit.
“Even as bodies may grow weaker, the value of older persons does not diminish. Instead, it deepens,” the Minister said, emphasizing the continued contributions of older persons to family life, community development and national progress.
Minister Hippolyte further noted that the Ministry, through the Division of Older Persons, remains committed to ensuring that the government’s response to the needs of an ageing population is streamlined, data-informed and inclusive, while creating opportunities for older persons to participate, engage and provide leadership.
A significant milestone highlighted in this year’s observance is the completion of the National Policy for Older Persons, which Minister Hippolyte described as a promise to ensure that older persons remain visible in national planning, disaster preparedness and other areas of national development.
The policy provides a framework for strengthening Saint Lucia’s response to the needs of its ageing population, including integrating ageing considerations into housing, transportation, digital access and climate resilience. It also supports opportunities for lifelong learning, workforce engagement, community service and greater intergenerational solidarity.
“Saint Lucia is proud to stand as a regional leader in ageing policy. But honestly, more than that, we’re proud to stand with you who built this nation with your hands, your hearts, and your sacrifices,” Minister Hippolyte said.
The Minister called on the nation to celebrate not only longevity, but meaningful and dignified lives, recognizing the wisdom of older persons, the resilience of communities and the value of creating opportunities for continued connection and contribution.
“As we mark International Day of Older Persons, we are reminded that ageing is not the closing of a chapter, but the opening of new possibilities; for connection, for contribution, for joy,” she added.
Minister Hippolyte extended gratitude to Saint Lucia’s older citizens and reaffirmed the importance of ensuring that they remain visible, respected and valued as an integral part of the nation’s heritage.
