The Department of Fisheries in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Sustainable Development is advising to exercise increased caution while at sea as the Saint Lucia Meteorological Service has advised that a strong tropical wave is expected to affect Saint Lucia from during the night of Friday, August 14, into the early hours of Saturday, August 15, 2026.

Rough seas, brisk winds and reduced visibility are expected as a result of this tropical wave. These conditions can make navigation difficult by reducing visibility, increasing the risk of vessel instability due to strong winds and high waves, and making it more challenging for to safely navigate at sea and return to shore.

Fishers and other marine users are urged to closely monitor and follow all Small Craft Advisories issued by the Saint Lucia Meteorological Office in relation to the passage of the tropical wave. Where an advisory recommends that small craft remain in port or stay on shore, fishers are urged to comply and avoid going to sea. Fishers should also take the necessary precautions to secure their boats, fishing gear, equipment and other property in advance of deteriorating marine conditions.

All fisherfolk are reminded that Small Craft Advisories are issued to help protect lives and property at sea, and all guidance issued by the Saint Lucia Meteorological Office should be followed throughout the period of adverse weather.

The Ministry reminds fishers that no catch is worth compromising personal safety. Operators are encouraged to exercise sound judgement and remain alert to changing conditions throughout their time at sea.
