THE CARIBBEAN ASSOCIATION OF NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEES CELEBRATED THE FIRST EVER CANOC WEEK FROM MARCH 4 – 10.

On March 8, Hon. Fortuna Belrose, Minister for Local Government and Culture, who is also the President of the National Olympic Committee and Regional Vice President of the Commonwealth Games Federation, delivered a message in observance of CANOC Week.

It was no coincidence that the senator chose the occasion of International Women’s Day to deliver her message, praising the role of women in regional sporting organizations during her address.

“As we continue to celebrate the Caribbean Associations of National Olympic Committees Week (CANOC) week, I salute all players in the sports movement; and more specifically, our women and organizations that remain committed to the core values of leadership, excellence, respect and tranquillity that pervades our Caribbean Communities,” she said.

CANOC was formally established in 2003, in recognition of the contribution and potential of sports to the development of member countries.

According to Minister Belrose, it was created for the preservation, coordination and development of structures and systems that facilitate the emergence of the best performers from the Caribbean for global recognition.

“Additionally CANOC created a formal network for the sharing and transfer of knowledge and other resources around sport, health and education,” she continued. “Through CANOC there is also a consistent deepening and integration of the people and culture of the Caribbean.”

The minister ended by thanking CANOC for its work, expressing hope that the commitment, discipline, perseverance and passion that drives success, would continue to fuel the organization, its membership and leadership for many generations to come.
