by Janelle Norville, GIS

On Sunday, Nov. 11, on the occasion of Remembrance Day, government officials, the diplomatic core, armed forces, ex-service men and the public banded together to pay their respects to those who sacrificed their lives during the war. Many men and women from the Caribbean during this time joined in the battle for freedom and peace. These individuals are celebrated on this day for their bravery and selflessness.

Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Hon. Allen Chastanet expressed gratitude to these men and women and their families for their sacrifice. Past President of the Saint Lucia Branch of the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Service League, Reginald Cherubin, asked that the public never forget what these brave souls fought for.

Resident British Commissioner for Saint Lucia H.E Steve McCready said the British government will this year support the 2018 Armistice installation: 36 foot figures of WWI soldiers in the foreign office as a representation of the soldiers’ contribution.

The French Ambassador to the OECS said there are lessons to be learnt from the wars.

This year’s observance of remembrance day, marks a century since the end of World War One. Nov. 11, is the anniversary date of the end of that war. History states the war ended at 11 a.m. on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, in 1918.
