As part of activities for Energy Awareness Month 2018, the Energy Unit of the Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Energy continues its education campaign this week, targeting schools in the south of the island.

Last week, the team held discussions and live demonstrations with students at schools in the northern districts.

The education campaign involves interactive sessions aimed at educating students on the energy landscape in Saint Lucia.

Public Utilities Officer, Mr. Kurt Inglis, said sensitization of the youth is vital if Saint Lucia is to achieve a sustainable energy future.

One major highlight of the education campaign is the practical demonstration of how an electric vehicle works, and the opportunity to ride in one of the state-of-the-art cars. Ms. Augusta Emmanuel, a science teacher at the Clendon Mason Memorial School said she was pleased with the hands-on nature of the exercise which provided students a realistic appreciation for technology.

The education campaign places particular emphasis on energy efficiency and conservation, renewable energy, Energy Awareness Month activities and the Utility-Scale Renewable Energy Project.

Students at the Mon Repos Combined School also welcomed the opportunity to learn about exciting opportunities in energy. The school visits are in keeping with activities in observance of Energy Awareness Month which is being observed under the theme “Pursuing Energy Independence.”
