Caribbean News: St Lucia Feels Dual Impact of Earthquakes and Tropical Storm Kirk

THE QUAKES HAPPENED LESS THAN AN HOUR APART THIS MORNING.

CASTRIES, St Lucia, Friday  September 28, 2018 –
Even as Tropical Storm Kirk’s heavy rains battered St Lucia after drenching Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean island was shaken by two earthquakes this morning.

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre (SRC) said the first – a 5.6 magnitude quake – occurred at 8:32 a.m.

It was centred 91 km northeast of Fort-de-France, Martinique; 108 km east southeast of Roseau, Dominica; and 134 km northeast of Castries, St Lucia.

The second, just under an hour later at 9:27 a.m., was a 4.2 magnitude tremor. The location was placed at 106 km northeast of Fort-de-France, Martinique; 129 km east southeast of Roseau, Dominica; and 142 km northeast of Castries, St Lucia.

Both were felt in St Lucia, as well as Martinique and Dominica.

There were no reports of damage from the quake. But Tropical Storm Kirk has been impactful.

The storm’s heavy rains flooded some areas and caused landslides.

There were also reports of downed trees and electricity outages in some parts of the island.

In its 11 a.m. bulletin, the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) in Miami said Kirk was weakening over the eastern Caribbean Sea, with maximum sustained winds reduced to 45 miles per hour, but the associated weather was still affecting the Windward Islands.

All tropical storm warnings and watches have been called off.
