Caribbean News: Kirk Could Become A Storm Again, Forecasters Say

INTERESTS IN THE WINDWARD AND LEEWARD ISLANDS SHOULD MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THE REMNANTS OF KIRK (BOTTOM).

FLORIDA, United States, Tuesday September 25, 2018
 – Forecasters say the region may not have seen the last of Kirk, a short-lived storm that formed over the weekend.

At 2 p.m., the remains of Kirk were located about 950 miles east of the Windward Islands and are moving quickly westward at around 25 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) in Miami said Tuesday.

It added that while the disturbance lacks a closed circulation, it “could redevelop into a tropical cyclone during the next day or two before it moves into an area of highly unfavourable upper-level winds while it approaches the Caribbean Sea.”

“Interests in the Windward and Leeward Islands should monitor the progress of this disturbance as gusty winds and locally heavy rains are likely over the next couple of days even if the system does not redevelop into a tropical cyclone,” the NHC said.

The disturbance has a 60 per cent chance of developing over the next two to five days.

As for subtropical depression Leslie – formerly a subtropical storm – that is forecast to become post-tropical today after it merges with a cold front over the central Atlantic.

After that time, Leslie is expected to reacquire subtropical or tropical characteristics by the end of the week as it meanders over the central Atlantic.

The chance of formation over the next five days is at 70 per cent.
