Caribbean News: Bermuda on Alert as Florence Becomes Third Hurricane of Atlantic Season

FLORIDA, United States, Tuesday September 4, 2018 – The third hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season developed this afternoon, with forecasters saying it poses no threat to land at this time. But meteorologists in Bermuda say Hurricane Florence could pass close to the island later this week.

At 5 p.m., Hurricane Florence was located about 1,305 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, and moving towards the west-northwest at 12 mile per hour.

It was carrying maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour.

According to the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) in Miami, some additional strengthening is possible through tonight, but Florence is expected to weaken beginning tomorrow and continuing through Friday.

But the Bermuda Weather Service said Florence could have its closest point of approach to the island within three days, with forecasts putting it 730 miles to the east southeast of the island around noon on Friday.

“However, this system may move closer to Bermuda after this time period depending upon its track,” it said.

Also on forecasters’ radar is a broad low pressure system located a few hundred miles south of the Cabo Verde Islands, which has a 30 per cent chance of developing over the next 48 hours but an 80 per cent chance of developing in the next five days.

“A tropical depression is likely to form by late this week or this weekend,” the NHC said.

It said the system is forecast to move slowly westward to west-northwestward across the eastern tropical Atlantic for the next several days, and environmental conditions are expected to gradually become more conducive for development.
