Dunnottar School & Vocational Centre - Special Education Teacher
  • Provide support, care and education for students with multiple disabilities. This includes assistance in toileting and changing of diapers, feeding, dressing, movement/mobility.
  • Collaborate with other classroom teachers, parents and specialists to provide an integrated plan for developing the capacities of students.
  • Assess students abilities, set learning goals, assess progress, and record their evaluations.
  • Develop and implement annual Individualized Educational Plans (IEP) for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
  • Coordinate the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.
  • Update parents on the progress of their students and enlist parental support with behaviour control and home activities designed to supplement their classroom lessons.
  • Supervise and support teaching assistants.
  • Help plan for the transition of students to productive lives after the completion of programme.



Knowledge Skills and Ability Required:
  • Minimum of 5 CXC passes, including mathematics and English, plus at least 2 years’ experience working with children with developmental disabilities or in the field of early childhood education.OR Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, special education, psychology or related field and at least 1 year experience working with students with disabilities or in the field of early childhood education.

    OR Bachelor’s degree in General nursing with at least 1 year practices experience.

  • Ability to effectively analyse needs and problems objectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, students, parents, staff, administration and the general public.
  • Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the total school program.
  • Willing and able to assist in the movement, positioning, massaging and lifting of students with physical disabilities when needed.
  • Knowledge of relevant technology including the use of technology to individualize instruction.
  • Must have the ability and proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.



Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
