The Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards (SLBS) has an active compliance program designed to ensure that all imported and locally-produced goods meet the compulsory standards required, in order to be retailed on the local market.

The compliance program includes import monitoring and general market surveillance for quality assurance and control.

SLBS Director, Verne Emmanuel, said the safety and protection of consumers is a major focus of the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards (SLBS).

“We invite the public to continue to be extremely vigilant in the use of standards, and also in ensuring that they report anomalies to the Bureau,” he said. “We have active workshops with importers and retailers with regard to the labelling requirements and compulsory standards that exist in Saint Lucia.”

The director added that the SLBS is currently investigating several matters concerning Liquid Petroleum Gas and other common household goods.

“LPG is an odorless gas and we add an odorant to ensure than persons can detect leaks. We have recently had complaints about the concentration of these odorants, and persons having difficulties in detecting the smell, and that for us is a major concern. The type of odorant in liquid petroleum gas produces a pungent smell which can normally be detected, and so if there are leaks that cannot be detected, it runs a serious risk of explosions, fires, and danger and damage to persons.”
