In a televised address on the observance of Labour Day (May 1), Labour Minister Hon. Stephenson King assured workers and employers that the Department of Labour will work assiduously to ensure that their rights, guaranteed within the Labour Act, are respected both at the work-place, and in the country generally.
Minister King added that the Department of Labour will be undertaking several initiatives intended to reinforce the legislative framework that governs industrial relations in Saint Lucia, in an attempt to safeguard and strengthen the strides made by workers through the trade union movement over the years.
“This year, the department will continue to work on concluding the review of the Labour Code, in preparation for consideration by the Parliament; initiating the mechanism for instituting a tripartite arrangement, to engender a stable and conducive industrial climate; implementing the recommendations of the management audit which was conducted last year, and develop a strategic plan for the department with an appropriate structure to effectively execute the mandate of the department; and the full development of the Labour Market Information System to facilitate the role of the Department of Labour as a provider of information on the labour market,” he said.
The department also plans to enhance the institutional, administrative and social architecture necessary for a favorable industrial climate, he added.
Labour Day 2018 was observed under the theme “Uniting Workers for Social and Economic Advancement.”
