Media Release: Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School Band and Choir Take the Lead in Climate Resilience Efforts with Launch of “Adapt” Calypso and Music Video.

by Sustainable Development
THE LAUNCH FEATURED A FULL SCREENING OF THE MUSIC VIDEO, REMARKS FROM KEY EDUCATION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OFFICIALS, AND A TOUCHING REFLECTION FROM A STUDENT CHOIR MEMBER

The Department of Sustainable Development (DSD) proudly unveiled the “Adapt” Calypso and Music Video at the National Television Network (NTN) studios, a bold creative initiative that places young voices at the heart of Saint Lucia’s climate change awareness movement. The event marked a milestone in public engagement under the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Green Climate Fund (GCF) Readiness Project. The Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School Band and Choir, three-time national choir champions, partnered with the Department to perform and star in the production— “Adapt” a rousing calypso, promoting climate adaptation, encouraging action to plan, prepare for, respond to and address the adverse effects of climate change.

The launch featured a full screening of the music video, remarks from key Education and Sustainable Development officials, and a touching reflection from a student choir member. The event also celebrated the support by corporate partners, Bank of Saint Lucia, Courts (UNICOMER), and CIBC Caribbean, who handed over brand-new musical instruments: a drum set, saxophone, trumpet and microphones to further strengthen the school’s outstanding music program—a gesture applauded by all in attendance. CIBC Caribbean Country Manager, Mr. Nigel Ollivierre, was so encouraged and moved by the video that in the moment, he pledged on the banks’ behalf to secure the outstanding instruments to fully outfit the school’s music room with new equipment. Two Djembes, two microphones and mic stands were added to the list donated to the school to support the expansion and strengthening of the school’s music program.

This initiative, part of a wider #adapt national awareness campaign, is a product of a vibrant collaboration between students, educators, musicians, corporate Saint Lucia and climate specialists. It was designed to amplify climate messages through culturally resonant content, bridging the gap between policy and public participation.

The “Adapt” calypso and music video is available to view on the Government of Saint Lucia and Department of Sustainable Development social media platforms. The Department expresses gratitude to all partners and stakeholders who made this launch possible. DSD encourages the public to join efforts to raise awareness on climate change adaptation by sharing the song and considering the small ways in which they can contribute to building Saint Lucia’s climate resilience.
