(Press Release) Odsan Combined opens library

by Fernelle Neptune, Ministry of Education
THE LIBRARY WAS RENAMED IN HONOR OF THE PAST PRINCIPAL, ANGELA BOULOGNE.

The learning environment and literacy of students of the Odsan Combined School will be enhanced through the use of a newly-refurbished library.

The library was renamed in honor of the past principal, Angela Boulogne, whose vision led to the creation of the learning space. Ms. Boulogne was at the helm to officially open the doors of the library at the Odsan Combined School.

During her address, she reminded students that learning is important and that they should utilize the resources wisely.

β€œTake the opportunity to be the best reader in the world,” she said. β€œTreasure the books, read them, save them, encourage them, take care of them because those who are coming after will need them. Read wisely. Don’t forget our own local writers, know them, find them, read them.”

Acting Principal of the Odsan Combined School, Anne Giffard-Elcock, expressed appreciation to the organizations for supporting the literacy of the students.

β€œA school library will foster and enhance the development of such skills; being able to write and being able to think critically. Students, as we open the library, I encourage you to read and ask questions when in doubt.”

Acting Education Officer for District Four, Cashena Emmanuel, encouraged students to use the school library as a place for learning.

β€œYour school library will enhance discipline, it teaches you how to be quiet and take time; it teaches you responsibility; to take care of your books and take responsibility for yourself in that you want to learn more. It allows you to respect yourself and others.”

The American NGO β€œHands Across the Sea” provided a shipment of books for the newly refurbished library.

Hands Across the Sea Representative, Clara Paul, said the organization remains committed to provide resources to support the literacy of students.

The newly-refurbished library was opened under the theme β€œThink it, Read it, Create it.”
