(Media Release) Tax filing for the self employed

by Geraldine Bicette-Joseph, GIS

SELF-EMPLOYED INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE UNSURE HOW TO PROCEED ARE ENCOURAGED TO VISIT IRD AUDITORS.

The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) is calling all self-employed individuals to visit their offices early to enlist the help needed in sorting out documentation.

Lesley-Anne Modeste, Senior Tax Inspector within the Tax Payer Services Unit states that services are in place to aid those who are a uncertain about what documentation is needed to proceed.

“For self-employed individuals who have incomplete records, or who are not sure how to proceed, during this month we encourage those persons to come in and we set up interviews, and you can have a conversation with our auditors who will provide the necessary guidance so that next year, you will know where to get the information you need. We are encouraging people to come in now, and not wait until the last minute to do so.”

Aware of the waiting times already being experienced by those who visit the IRD offices during the season, Ms Modeste suggests certain steps should be taken at home in an effort to expedite the process.

“We encourage clients not to come in with a blank form. Please fill in your personal details on page one and two of the tax returns. We will guide you through everything else. These are basic things that one can do at home, even if he or she is having some challenges.”

Taxpayers are reminded of their legal obligation to submit their annual income tax return to the IRD on or before March 31.
