by SALCC
THE DEBATE WILL BE HELD IN SAINT VINCENT, WITH FOUR COMMUNITY COLLEGES PARTICIPATING.

The Sir Arthur Lewis Community College debate team will participate in the second annual Windward Islands Debate Competition (WIDC) in Saint Vincent from March 2 – 3.

The team comprises second year students Omar Combie, Jevon Charles, Tibenna Fraser and Reshul Narhari and first year student Rahym Joseph.

The debate will be held in two rounds among the four community colleges participating. The other three participating colleges are the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, Dominica State College, and the T. A. Marryshow Community College, representing Grenada.  The debate will run over a two-day period with teams participating in a semi-final and final round.

The semi-final topics are: “The perpetual heavy reliance on tourism by Caribbean countries as an economic driver is unwise”; and “There should be fixed terms for Prime Ministers in the OECS countries”.

The topic for the final round is: “The lack of good governance in the Caribbean is more debilitating to sustainable development than the likely impacts of Climate Change.”

The aim of the WIDC is to reinforce the multidisciplinary approach which is needed to assess the needs of Caribbean societies and nurture critical thinkers who will help shape the democratic societies of the Caribbean region. It will also serve to promote regional integration, collegial information sharing and cultural exchanges.

The team is grateful for the support of coaches and facilitators Dr. Thomas Samuel, Dr. Jimmy Fletcher, Dr. Ernest Hilaire and Mr. Dwight Lay.

Their uniforms were sponsored by E6 Inc. and CMDC Inc. The inaugural competition was hosted by the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in 2017.
