The Governor General of Saint Lucia, His Excellency Sir Emmanuel Neville Cenac, recently met with the new Ambassador-Designate of the Republic of Korea to Saint Lucia, His Excellency Sung Moonup.

The October 4 meeting on the occasion of the Presentation of Credentials, led Sir Neville to severely denounce North Korea’s nuclear and missile facilities.

“As Head of State, I join with the Head of Government, Prime Minister Chastanet and all in Saint Lucia a peace-loving people, to denounce in the severest language possible the recent dangerous acts of provocation by ballistic missiles unleashed against South Korea by its own brother, North Korea,” he said. He also conveyed a desire for peace between the two states.

“Our desire is that soon the Korean Peninsula will learn to dwell together in unity as every family should. The world must have watched with joy and sadness the tearful demonstration of that longing for improvement in relations, when it was recently made possible for one brother to embrace the other having so long parted. We pray that this be the beginning of the end to all hostilities.”

Ambassador Moonup, similarly expressed his country’s desire for peace and global security, and acknowledged the close ties between Saint Lucia and South Korea.

“At the global stage, our two countries have been enjoying a close partnership on various international platforms such as the United Nations by rendering mutual support. I hope such tradition continues in the years to come. In addition to sharing our commitment to global peace and security, I look forward to Saint Lucia’s continuing support for positive transition of the situation in the Korean peninsula toward denuclearization and the establishment of everlasting peace.”

The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1979 and will commemorate the 40th anniversary of relations in 2019. Saint Lucia and South Korea have most recently cooperated on natural disaster response and climate change adaptation.
