THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS ISSUES GUIDELINES FOR PEOPLE AT HIGHER RISK OF COVID-19.

Given that a possible outbreak of COVID-19 is of significant concern to people with underlying health conditions, the Department of Health and Wellness makes it a priority to provide guidance on how a person can protect him/herself.

Health Educator of the Bureau of Health Education, Nadiege Smith-Lambert, spoke on the necessary actions those vulnerable persons to COVID-19 should take in order to reduce their risk of getting sick with the disease.

“Some examples of chronic medical conditions are heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, asthma. Some of the tips we would like for persons to follow are to ensure you have at least one month supply of your medication, contact your health care provider to ask about obtaining extra necessary medication. We would like persons to get the recommended eight hours of sleep to be able to build their immunity, eat fruits, vegetables and a balanced meal, stay hydrated, wash your hands often with water and soap and avoid touching your face with uncleaned hands.”

Smith-Lambert also called on people who are at higher risk of COVID-19 to consider social distancing as a means of reducing interaction with others who are sick.

“During COVID-19 outbreak in your community, stay home as much as possible to further reduce your risk of being exposed. Avoid crowds as much as possible, have enough households items and groceries on hand so that you will be prepared to stay at home for a period. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.”

The Department of Health and Wellness once again encourages Saint Lucians who have serious chronic medical conditions to take the necessary precautions to reduce the transmission of COVID-19.
