Media Release: SLBS to observe World Metrology Day

by SLBS
THE MAY 20 OBSERVANCE WILL FOCUS ON THE FUTURE REVISION OF THE METRIC SYSTEM.

Saint Lucia will join the rest of the world in the observance of World Metrology Day on May 20.

The Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards will commemorate the occasion with an outreach activity to the Micoud and Beanefield secondary schools in the southern part of the island.

The outreach will be a presentation to Form 4 students who are preparing for CSEC Physics with a focus on the application of physics in metrology which is the science of measurement.

The theme for World Metrology Day 2018 is “Constant Evolution of the International System of Units.” This theme was chosen to bring awareness to a new agreement set for November 2018, when the General Conference on Weights and Measures (GCPM) is expected to agree to one of the largest changes to the International System of Units, the SI, also known as the metric system, since its inception.

The proposed changes are based on the results of years of research into new measurement methods which are tied to fundamental constants in nature. The International System of Units will be based on a set of definitions each linked to the laws of physics and have the advantage of being able to embrace further improvements in measurement science and technology, to meet the needs of future users for many years to come.

The Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards assures manufacturers, utilities, financial institutions, motorists, consumers, and the education, tourism, medical, construction and commercial sectors, that the future revision of the metric system is not expected to impact their use of metric units for commerce and in daily life.

The SLBS however, will remain vigilant in its monitoring of developments at international measurement organizations like the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, and the International Organization of Legal Metrology, to ensure that any significant changes are rapidly communicated to local stakeholders and consumers.
