“SAINT LUCIA: INTO THE FUTURE” TO EDUCATE ON CLIMATE CHANGE AND BIODIVERSITY.

The Department of Sustainable Development, through the “Increase Saint Lucia’s Capacity to Monitor Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) Implementation and Sustainable Development Project,” aims to provide support to develop Saint Lucia’s environmental information management system; increase access to environmental information and knowledge; and enhance public awareness throughout the different levels of society.

In accordance with these aims, a web-based National Environmental Information System (NEIS) [https://www.neis.govt.lc/] was launched in 2018. It facilitates open sharing of critical environmental data for cross-sectoral and inter-agency collaborative evidence-based policy and development planning. As part of efforts to mainstream the use of the NEIS for these purposes and to illustrate environmental scenarios reflecting possible futures and pathways for Saint Lucia under increasingly severe climate change conditions and other pressures on local ecosystems, Saint Lucia: Into the Future was produced.

Saint Lucia: Into the Future is a compilation of scenarios of a plausible future of Saint Lucia under increasingly severe climate conditions, land degradation and loss of biodiversity. These scenarios are based on trends observed in quantitative data, expert opinions from interviews, video evidence and desk research. This film is a demonstration of the use of the NEIS for translation of data into useful and actionable information; and presents a baseline for environmental scenarios in Saint Lucia which can be revisited, revised and used to inform strategic planning.

Minister for Education, Innovation, Gender Relations and Sustainable Development, Hon. Dr. Gale Rigobert, said: “We continue to work to increase public education, awareness and participation in environmental management for the sustainable development of Saint Lucia. The broadcast of this film is a vital part of our people-centered approach and is especially pertinent as an ambitious effort is required from all of us for our own benefit and that of future generations.”

The public education film, “Saint Lucia: Into the Future” will provide an audiovisual response through a series of environmental scenarios. The film will be broadcasted as a series of environmental scenario episodes on climate change, land degradation and biodiversity every Tuesday, commencing Aug. 11, 2020.
