Media Release: The USNS Comfort has arrived

THE SHIP WILL BE BERTHED AT SEA. A SMALLER VESSEL WILL BE USED TO TRANSPORT PATIENTS.

The voluntary medical mission of the United States Naval Ship (USNS), Comfort has arrived.

The USNS Comfort will be in Saint Lucia from Sep. 23 to Oct. 2, and will provide free medical services for residents.

Services at the walk-in clinics will be provided from Sep. 25 – 30 at the Owen King EU Hospital, and the National Cultural Centre.

Medical Officer for Health, Dr. Sharon Belmar George, said: “Due to the size of the ship and the depth of our harbour we will not be able to accommodate the vessel at Pointe Seraphine. It will be berthed at sea and a smaller vessel from La Place Carenage, Gate #2, will transport patients to the ship. All surgical patients and patients requiring CT scans need to be accompanied by an adult when coming for surgery. This person will be required to remain on the ship during the provision of care, and for the duration of the admission on the ship.”

Patients confirmed for surgery attended a pre-screening session on Sep. 24, at the EU Hospital.

“All other clients who may need surgery and have not sent in a referral can access the walk in clinics for review and scheduling of surgery,” Dr. George said.

Arrangements have been made through the President of the National Council of Public Transportation to provide shuttle service to the EU Hospital via Ciceron and Bexon buses; and to the National Cultural Center via La Clery buses.

The public is advised that there will be increased activity from the port to the site of the clinics, including low-flying helicopters.
