Media Release: Minister addresses nation on Labour Day

by GIS
HON. STEPHENSON KING SAID WORKERS’ CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE COUNTRY HAVE BEEN QUITE SIGNIFICANT.

Minister for Infrastructure, Ports, Energy and Labour, Hon Stephenson King, addressed the nation yesterday, on the occasion of Labour Day.

This year, Labour Day is observed under the theme Uniting Workers for Social and Economic Advancement.

“This is a theme that is rich in meaning, relevance and significance, and one that reinforces the absolute mandate of the labour movement throughout the World,” he said.

Minister King said society often tends to overlook the value of the contributions of workers and the strides made by trade unions in strengthening laws and elevating the social and economic standards of workers.

“The progress and strides made by the labour movement here in Saint Lucia must always be at the fore and core of our collective consciousness,” he said. “We must, of necessity, focus on our achievements and more importantly aim to build on that foundation.  Never should we lose sight of opportunities to make further advancements.”

The minister assured workers and employers that the Department of Labour will work assiduously to ensure that the rights, entitlements and safe-guards guaranteed within the Labour Act are respected and implemented.

Labor Day is observed on May 1, annually.
